What are the 10+ / 11+ / 13+?
The 10+, 11+ and 13+ are school entrance exams for selective private day, private boarding and grammar schools. They are highly competitive and most commonly test students on their ability in English, Maths and Reasoning. Some schools also extend their testing to source work incorporating elements of science, history and geography and some require problem solving and critical thinking skills too. Most schools will also interview prospective students and perhaps invite them for an activity day or classroom experience.
The 10+ exam is taken in Year 5 for entry into Year 6. This is not as common an entry point as it used to be but is still offered by a handful of London day schools such as Whitgift, City of London, Emmanuel and KIngston Grammar (deferred entry to year 7). It is potentially less ruthless than the 11+ so if these schools are top of your list then it would be advisable to enter your child into these exams to try secure a place.
The 11+ exam is taken in Year 6 for entry into Year 7. It is the main entry point for all selective private and grammar schools. This is because the most spaces are available at the beginning of year 7 for a cohort of new students. Its essentially a whole new year group! As a result these exams are highly competitive and require preparation as far out as Year 4 to be sure that your child is ready for the rigour and breadth of what they will be tested on.
The 13+ entrance exam is also taken in Year 6 but entry is deferred to Year 9 for the chosen school. This a route most favoured by those in a prep school that already goes up to year 8. Securing your place at a secondary school for year 9 is done in year 6 and the chosen school will want to see school reports from year 7 and year 8 to ensure your child is still on track before they join in year 9. In some cases the school will require your child to sit the 13+ Common Entrance exams in year 8 which provide a marker for your child's academic progression through years 7 and 8.
