What are A Levels and what is the IB?
A levels are taken in years 12 and 13 of secondary school, also known as sixth form. Students usually specialise in three, four or five subjects for their A Levels and the work over the two years leads up to final exams in the summer term of year 13. A levels are recognised by all top universities in the UK and are the most common pathway to undergraduate entry.
The IB is the International Baccalaureate and is studied in 143 countries worldwide and aimed at broadening students' knowledge and helping them to flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically.. Students are required to choose six subjects: their home language, a second language, a subject from the humanities, an experimental science, maths and either an arts subject or a second subject from the humanities, languages or sciences. Students study three subjects at Higher Level (HL) and three subjects at Standard Level (SL). In addition, all students complete the ‘IB Core’: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), an Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). Whilst most schools still only offer A Levels in the UK, the IB is becoming more and more popular.
